Glacier Hiking
Hike on ice! No where else in Alaska can you so easily access an immense alpine glacier.
The first mile and a half follows an old wagon road. Stop several times along the way to discuss glaciology and geology. At the glacier strap on crampons and with simple instruction and practice; you'll feel secure walking on the ice! For adventurers who want to expand their horizons and explore more of the Root Glacier, you may upgrade to the full day hike. When the morning hikers head back to Kennecott, explorers continuing on will set their sights on the cascading waterfall flowing off of Donoho Peak into an immense cavern underneath the Root and Kennicott Glaciers, or head towards the 7,000 foot Stairway Icefall.
