Skagway
Did you know...Skagway is known as the “SUNSHINE” capitol of southeast, with only 27 average inches of precipitation per year?
Located 90 miles north of Juneau on the Lynn Canal, Skagway is known for its Gold Rush history.
In 1897, thousands of prospectors sailed the Inside Passage to Skagway. From there, they carried supplies over the 33-mile Chilkoot Trail or 40-mile White Pass Trail, headed for Dawson City in Canada's Yukon Territory.
The construction of the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway in 1898 provided an easier route north and helped maintain the town’s population following the gold rush.
The railway currently serves as a popular summer visitor attraction, along with the restored buildlings that once provided temptations to prospectors visiting town.
