Wasilla/Palmer

Palmer Farm Fields

Did you know...the WORLD record for biggest cabbage (127 lbs!) was set at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer?

An hour drive north of Anchorage on the George Parks Highway lies the town of Wasilla. Located in the Matanuska – Susitna Valley, Wasilla is the fastest growing community in Alaska. Wasilla is known as the Home of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, with the Race Headquarters and many dog mushers here. Wasilla residents enjoy a rural lifestyle despite the close proximity to Anchorage.

The community of Palmer is located an hour’s drive north of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway. Founded as an agricultural community, one can view world record sized vegetables produced in the fertile Matanuska Valley at the Alaska State Fair every fall. Enormous cabbages have been grown weighing more than 100 pounds! While in Palmer, visit the historic downtown area, the Musk Ox Farm, or travel a little further north to scenic Hatcher Pass and Independence Mine State Historic Park.
