Whittier
Did you know... Whittier is home to the LONGEST tunnel in North America?
Whittier is on the west side of Prince William Sound, 75 miles southeast of Anchorage. The community is accessed by boat or by mountain tunnel. Previously available only to rail service, the construction of the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel opened the toll tunnel to vehicle traffic in 2001. Used as an Army facility during World War II, most of the residents live in buildings that were constructed to accommodate Army personnel. Whittier serves as a jump-off point for Prince William Sound activities including glacier cruises, kayaking, and fishing.
