Note: If checking luggage, be sure to inform the Alaska Airlines agent of your final destination if you are boarding in Anchorage (for Barrow tours) or Fairbanks (for Nome tours) and please mention your final destination on your return flight to ensure that boarding passes are issued for both segments of your flight to check your bags to the correct destination.

Can I bring luggage?

Carry-On Baggage
The following baggage rules apply only when traveling on flights operated by Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. If your itinerary includes travel on another airline, please check the other airline's Web site for their specific baggage rules.

You're allowed one carry-on bag, which can measure up to 10" H x 17" W x 24" L (25 x 43 x 61 cm) including wheels and handles, plus one personal item, such as a purse, briefcase or laptop computer. At least one of the items should be stowed under the seat in front of you.

Items exceeding the free carry-on allowance will be charged $25 per piece and tagged for delivery to baggage claim at the customer’s destination.

Important: Keys, medication, and travel documents should always be packed in your carry-on baggage.

Checked Bags
Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air flights wholly within the State of Alaska are not subject to standard baggage fees for checked luggage. However, each bag must weigh 50 pounds or less and have a maximum dimension of 62 linear inches (length + height + width) to avoid additional charges. The charges noted below are based on one-way travel and are collected at the time of check-in.

Note: If carrying excess baggage (over 3 bags) or items exceeding the weight and dimension limits, your luggage may be subject to extra fees. Also, be aware that luggage policies are subject to change by carrier decision at any time.

How should I dress for my Arctic excursion?

Arctic Tours to Barrow and Nome operate during the summer months of mid-May through mid-September. However, due to extreme fluctuations in weather for this region, you should always come prepared with warm gear... especially if your trip is in early or late season. You may check out our suggested packing list for Summer here. And as we always say: "dress like an onion!"... meaning in layers you can shed or add as weather changes throughout your trip.

For all Arctic visits, we recommend bringing a day pack with warm hat, gloves and scarf with water/wind-proof jacket. You might be overprepared if the sun is shining, but you'll be glad if it's not. There is also some walking both in town where roads are unpaved and may be muddy, so make sure your shoes are comfortable and durable.

And as always, please call our friendly, knowledgeable staff if you have any questions while preparing for your upcoming adventure and we'd be happy to lend more advice specific to your time of visit. You can reach us toll free 1.800.523.7405

What is the weather like?

Average temperatures and daylight can vary depending on your day of visit. Click here to see the average statistics for the Far North/Arctic Region

Also, travel insurance is not included in your package - but we do highly recommend purchasing as Arctic weather conditions can often affect scheduled flights and excursions to these remote regions. Trips are strictly non-refundable, unfortunately, even with weather interference. If you did not request/confirm this at the time of booking with your Explore Tours agent, we suggest looking into adding directly at: www.insuremytrip.com

What is not included in my Arctic Tour package?

Our special Arctic excursions to Barrow and Nome do not include tips for hotel personnel, restaurant servers, tour guides, bus drivers, meals or any items of personal nature.

Also note: your departure city transfers are not included. It is the responsibility of each guest to make their way to their departure airport. Only transfers upon arrival in Arctic destination are included in your package.
