Historic Wrangell-St. Elias National Park - Tour 950

7 Day Safari Tour

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, our largest national park, is where the Chugach, Wrangell and St. Elias mountain ranges converge -- along with North America's largest collection of glaciers. While Denali may be the continent's tallest mountain, it's here where the most peaks over 16,000 feet exist - like Mount St. Elias(18,008 ft.), the second highest mountain in the country.

The history of this region is as rich as the copper ore once mined here. An historic walking tour in Kennicott, as well as rafting, flightseeing, and glacier hiking, combine adventure with an appreciation of the area's (ore) rich history! Also included is a trip to the port town of Valdez, nestled in the Chugach Mountains -- Alaska's Little Switzerland. Take a natural wildlife cruise in Prince William Sound - and kayak near the famous Columbia Glacier. Travel back to Anchorage by state ferry across the Sound.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive in Anchorage in time to check in to your hotel and join the group for your pre-trip meeting and dinner. (Better yet, plan on arriving an extra day or two early and take in the sights of Alaska's largest city!)

Day 2
After an early breakfast, head up the Glenn Highway, a National Scenic Byway, for the first stop - a thrilling glacial raft trip (and the possibility of spotting Dall sheep); ideal for beginners or those who have rafted before (class III and IV). Have lunch at an historic Alaskan lodge before finishing off your day's travel in Copper Center.

Day 3
Wake up to glorious views of the Wrangell Mountains and, after a nourishing breakfast, begin your journey into the largest national park in the system. Stop at the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park Visitors Center before traveling Edgerton Highway to historic Chitina. Here you'll be met by the bush planes that will take the group on a flightseeing trip further into the Park and on to McCarthy, your home for the next two nights. Check into a quaint historic lodge, have lunch, then make the quick trip to Kennicott - and an historic walking tour among the ruins. Dinner will be back in McCarthy.

Day 4
After breakfast, return to Kennicott to be fitted for crampons and your alpine glacier hike. Learn about the areas glaciology and geology - and after basic instruction and practice, take to the ice and its magical glacial streams and waterfalls. (All ages/all ability levels.) Return mid-afternoon with time for you to relax in historic McCarthy, eat dinner, and get ready for tomorrow's next adventure.

Day 5
Mid-morning today, fly back to Chitina for lunch. After that, it's just a few hours to Valdez - with stops along the way to take in beautiful sights including the Worthington Glacier. Tonight's an evening to visit the Museum, walk around the Harbor, learn more about Alaska's gold rush history, and have dinner on your own.

Day 6
Travel by small boat into beautiful Prince William Sound - home to marine mammals, numerous bird species, and more tidewater glaciers than anywhere else on earth! Those who want to, will be able to kayak in the Sound, while others will stay onboard the boat. Everyone returns in the late afternoon with time to freshen up before your final night dinner and farewell to Valdez and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

Day 7
Head back to Anchorage today in time for flights back home or to elsewhere in The Great Land.
