Itinerary/Details

Day 1 Fairbanks Arrival

Arrive into Fairbanks today. Pick up your Milepost Travel Guide and document package upon check-in at your Fairbanks hotel. This evening, you may decide to have an optional Salmon Bake Dinner at Pioneer Park or visit the University of Alaska Museum of the North.  Overnight in Fairbanks. 

Day 2 Fairbanks / Tok

Travel south on the Richardson and Alaska Highways to Tok (Approximately 5.5 hours, 206 miles, 331 km).  Overnight in Tok. 

Day 3 Tok / Dawson City

Depart Tok and cross the Canadian border on your drive to Dawson City (approximately 3.5 hours, 150 miles, 241 km) along the "Top of the World" Highway. Overnight in Dawson City. 

Day 4 Dawson City

The day is yours to experience the attractions of Dawson City.  Optional activities in this historic Klondike town include gold panning excursions and Diamond Tooth Gertie’s. Overnight in Dawson City. 

Day 5 Dawson City / Tok

Cross the Yukon River once more and return to Tok your overnight. To discover how Tok got its name, stop by the Mainstreet Visitor Center. Overnight in Tok.  

Day 6 Tok / Chitina

Take the Tok Cutoff to Glennallen and follow the Richardson Highway toward Valdez. Chitina is located at mile 33 of the Edgerton Higway (don’t miss your turn), near the confluence of the Copper River and Chitina River. Overnight at Gilpatrick’s Hotel in Chitina.

Day 7 Chitina / McCarthy

Driving this road is an Alaskan adventure! Although regularly maintained by the State of Alaska, the gravel surface makes for slow travel-it usually takes three hours each way. At the end of the road, you will find parking areas and two foot bridges that cross the Kennicott River and lead to McCarthy and Kennecott. Overnight at Ma Johnson’s Hotel.  

Day 8 McCarthy

Enjoy a free day exploring the towns of McCarthy and Kennecott. You may wish to participate in an optional day tour such as a mine tour, or glacier hike. Overnight in McCarthy at Ma Johnson’s Hotel. 

Day 9 McCarthy / Denali Highway

The Denali Highway is a scenic, 133 mile/214 km route connecting the Richardson Highway with Denali National Park and Preserve. The highway begins at Paxson Junction (mile 177/km 285 on the Richardson Highway) and ends at Cantwell Junction where it merges with the Parks Highway. Overnight at Tangle River Inn, Denali Highway. 

Day 10 Denali Highway / Denali Park

Opened in 1957, the Denali Highway was the first road access to Denali National Park (then known as Mount McKinley National Park). Most of the land along the highway is publicly owned. This is a stretch of wild Alaska that is pretty much unspoiled, relatively accessible and beautiful. Overnight at the Denali Park Entrance. 

Day 11 Denali Park

Get an early start this morning with the Eielson Shuttle Bus into Denali National Park.  Learn more about the six million acres of wilderness and the wildlife that encompass this scenic Park.  Be sure to bring your camera and look for moose, bears, caribou, and more!  Return to the Park entrance for your overnight. 

Day 12 Denali / Fairbanks / Chena

Leave Denali for an enjoyable drive to Fairbanks (approximately 3 hours, 125 miles, 201 km). Keep an eye out for wildlife and other photo opportunities along the way. The 56.5 mile/91 km highway to Chena Hot Springs turns off the Steese Highway at mile 4 and traverses the Chena Recreation Area on its way to Chena Hot Springs, one of the state's most prominent resorts.  

Day 13 Chena Hot Springs

Chena Hot Springs Resort is a small Interior Alaskan community that was founded over 100 years ago and has become the most developed hot springs resort in Alaska. Pool passes are included with your stay. 

Day 14 Chena / Fairbanks

Spend the morning at Chena Hot Springs and return to Fairbanks this afternoon. The Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center is worth a visit and it is free of charge. Overnight in Fairbanks. 

Day 15 Fairbanks Departure

Your tour comes to an end today. Spend anytime you have before your flight to purchase those last souvenirs to bring home to family and friends.
