The Great Arctic: Kotzebue & Nome
Cross the Arctic Circle as you travel into the thriving hub of Alaska's northwest region, Kotzebue and to Nome, where you'll visit the site of the finish line of the famous Iditarod Sled Dog Race!
Itinerary/Details
Day 1 Anchorage / Kotzebue
Travel from Anchorage to Kotzebue crossing the Arctic Circle on a morning Alaska Airlines flight. You will be met by your tour guide at the airport and taken to the Nullagvik Hotel (early check-in will be requested). In addition to 71 guest rooms, the hotel also features an observation room that looks out over the Arctic Sound and a restaurant that offers delicious food and fantastic views.
At 10:00am you will gather in the hotel lobby to start your city tour. On your excursion, get a fuller picture of Kotzebue’s past and present by visiting local points of interest. Your story teller (aka tour guide) will ensure you get more than just a sightseeing trip—you will gain a deeper understanding of the history, culture and everyday life of the Inupiaq people. Tour will last approximately 5 hours including one hour lunch, featuring stops at the Northwest Arctic Heritage Center, White Alice Communication Station, Devil’s Lake, and local gift shop.
Day 2 Kotzebue / Nome / Anchorage
This morning you'll travel from Kotzebue to Nome on Alaska Airlines where you'll be picked up by your tour guide for a sightseeing excursion of Nome, Alaska's oldest continuous first class city. Nome is located on the south coast of the Seward Peninsula facing Norton Sound, part of the Bering Sea. Known as the commercial hub of northwestern Alaska, as well as the site for the finish of the Last Great Race a 1049-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Drive 70 miles through some of the Peninsula’s most stunning landforms to tiny Teller, (population: 275)--the only village connected to Nome by road. Look for moose, reindeer, fox, and musk ox, and see a glacial moraine overlooking the Bering Sea. History abounds here as well—you’ll see an old wooden gold-mining dredge and visit a local Inupiaq Eskimo couple who will share fascinating tales and videos of their remote life just below the Arctic Circle!
